Music

The film score will be produced in the traditional musical style that was originally developed by St. Yared, a legendary Ethiopian musician who invented the sacred music tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, that is Ethiopia’s system of musical notation, and Zema  or chant tradition of Ethiopia. St. Yared developed three tones: Ge’ez, Izel, Ararai . Ge’ez is a musical style that is described as hard and imposing. Scholars often refer to it as dry and devoid of sweet melody. Izel, which is melodic, gentle and sweet, is often chanted after Ge’ez. It is also described as an affective tone suggesting intimation and tenderness. Ararai, a melodious and melancholic note, is often used during somber moments, such as fasting and funerals. Music scholars regard these scales as sufficient to encompass all the musical scores of the world. These scales are sources of chants or songs of praise, tragedy and joy.
