የዳይሬክተሩ ሃሳብ በቁራኛዬ ፊልም (ዳራ፣ ጭብጥ፣ ውቅር፣ ቀለም)

ቁራኛዬ በኢትዮጵያ ዘመናዊነት ሲሰፍን የተሻረውን ጥንታዊ የህግ ስርዓት የሚያሰቃኝ አንድ ቀላል የፍትህና የፍቅር ፊልም ነው፡፡  ጥንታዊ የታሪክ መፃህፍትን ስፈትሽ፣ በኢትዮጵ እስከ 19ኛው ምዕተ ዓመት አጋማሽ ድረስ መዋቅራዊ እስር ቤት አለመኖሩንና ባህላዊው የፍትህ ስርዓቱ ከመኮነን ይልቅ  የእርምተ-ጥቅም ፋይዳ የነበረው መሆኑን ሳስተውልና የዘንድሮውን የፍትህ ስርዓት ስመለከት አንድ ትልቅ ገደል መኖሩን ከግምት ከተትኩ፡፡ በጥንቱ ዘመን በማንኛውም ከባድ ጠብ የተጋጩ ባላንጦች ተቆራኝተው እስከ ዙፋን ችሎት መቅረብና በደላቸውን በችሎት ሙግት/ውርድ ማስረዳትና ፍትህን የምፀኑ ነበር፡፡ ይህ ስርዓት በልጅ እያሱ እንዲቆም ቢደረግም እስከ ሃይለስላሴ ስርዓተ-መንግስት ቀጥሎ እንደነበር መረጃዎች ይጠቁማሉ፡፡

የጥንቱ ዘመን ተሟገቾች በችሎት የሚያደርጉት የሰውነት እንቅስቃሴና የቃላት ጥብቀት (ከነሰምና ወርቁ)፣ ምርጥ የገሃዱ ዓለም ተዋንያን መሆናቸውን ያሳያል፡፡ የሚውሉበትም ቦታዎች፣ የቅኔ ትምህርት ቤቶች፣ የችሎት ቦታዎች፣ የማህበር ቤቶች፣ የእርሻ ሜዳውና ተራራው ሁሉ አብሮአቸው የሚተውን መሆኑን መረዳት ስችል፣ የምፈልገውን ፊልማዊ ርዕሰ ጉዳይና ይዘት ያገኘው መሆኑ ተሰምቶኝ የፊልም ፅሁፍን ለመፃፍ ተነሳሳሁ፡፡ በመነሻ ሀሳቤ እንድ የቆሎ ተማሪ እንድ የህግ አዋቂ (ጭቃ ሹም) ሚስት ሲያማግጥ ተይዞ፣ ተቆራኝቶ የ 15 ቀን መንገድ ተጉዘው ዙፋን ችሎት (ንግስት ዘውዲቱ ዘንድ) ቀርቦ ሲሟገት የሚያሳይ ታሪክ ማሰላሰል ጀመርኩ፡፡

የታሪኩ ጭብጥና ገለፃ (ትሪትመንት) ከተፃፈ በኋላ፣ የፊልሙን ሙሉ ስክሪፕት መፃፉ በጣም አስደሳች የምናብ ጉዞ ሆኖ አግቼዋለሁ፡፡ የማላውቀውን ዓለም 100 ዓመታት ወደ ኋላ በመጓዝ፣ በወቅቱ የነበረውን ምስል፣ ድምፅ፣ ቋንቋ፣ ስነቃል ተዓማኒነት ባለው መልኩ ከታሪኩ ጋር ለመግመድ፣ 4 ዓመታት ቢፈጅም፣ እጅግ አዝናኝና አስተማሪ ነበር፡፡ ስክሪፕቱ 11 ጊዜ ከታረመ በኋላ የፊልም ቡድኑ ተሟልቶ ወደ ቀረፃ ገባን፣ ቀረፃው ግን ከግምታችን ውጪ ፈታኝና እልህ አስጨራሽ ነበር፣ መላው የቀረፃ ቡድን የታሪኩን ክብደትና የሚፈልገውን የፊልም ጥበብ ከግምት ውስጥ በመክት ከፍተኛ ጥንቃቄ በተመላው መለኩ በተናጠልና በቡድን መስራት ነበረብን፡፡ ቀረፃው ሲጠናቀቅ ኤዲቲንግ ክፍል ውስጥም የነበረውም ሂደት ቀላል አልነበረም፣ ለታሪኩ የሚሆን የታሪክ ውቅር እንደገና መፈተሽ፣ የፊልሙን ማጀቢያ ከታሪኩ ጋር በሚግባባ መልኩ መፍጠር ጠቅላላ የፊልም ቡድኑን የፈተነ አንድ ልዩ የፊልም ስራ ትምህርት ቤት ሆኖልን ነበር፡፡

የፊልሙ ዋና ውቅር የተገኘው ከቅኔ ትምህርት ስርዓተ ታሪክ/ትመህርት ውስጥ ነው፡፡ በነበረኝ የመረጃና ጥናት ማሰባሰብ ወቅት፣ የቅኔ መምህሩ አንድ ፋይዳ ያለው ታሪካዊ ክስተት ለተማሪዎቻቸው አብራርተው ይተርካሉ፣ በዕለቱ የተሾመ ሹም ታሪክ አሊያም በዕለቱ የዋለ ክብረ በዓል ይሆናል፡፡  ተማሪዎቹም በሰምና ወርቅ የተገመደ፣ በጥብቅ ቃላት የተከሸነ ቅኔ ዘርፈው ይመጣሉ፣ ለመምህሩና ለተማሪዎችም ያስተቻሉ፣ በለስ የቀናውና ብዙ ያስተነተነ እጣነሞገር ሲዘርፍ፣ ሌላው እንዳቅሙ ጉባኤ ቃና ይዘርፋል፡፡ ታሪክ ትረካ ማህበራዊ አንደምታ አለው ታሪክንና አብሮነት ከመጠበቅ አንፃር፡፡ ታሪክ ትረካ መፃዒና ፋይዳዊ አንድምታም አለው (ይበልጥ በመመራመር-ቅኔ ለመዝረፍም) ይተረካልና፣ በዚህ ታሪክ እንደዳይሬክተር የአንድ የቅኔ መምህር ቦታን ይዤ ታሪኩን ለማቅረብ ሞክሬአለሁ፣ ታሪኩን የቅርቡንንና የሩቁን እያፈራረቅሁ ስተርክ በምላሹ ከተመልካች ቅኔ ጠብቄ፣  

በፊልሙ ምስሉ፣ ሙዚቃውና ግራፊክሱ ከታሪኩ አንፃር ዝግ ያለና ጥንታዊ እንዲመስል ተሞክሯል፣ ቋንቋውም ብዙ ተደክሞበታል፡፡ 

አፈታሪክ ዋና ባህላዊ እሴት በሆነበት ሃገርና አህጉር ውስጥ ስኖር ፊልም ሰሪ ለመሆን በማደርገው ጥረት ይህንን ትኩረት ያልተሰጠው ታሪክ በፊልም መልክ አቀናብሬ ከተለመደው የፊልም ቀለም ለየት ባለ መልኩ ማቅረብ በመቻሌ የእድለኛነት ስሜት ይሰማኛል፡፡ ከጥበብ ቤተሰቦች የማገኘውም ማንኛውም አዎንታዊና አሉታዊ ሂስ የሚያስተምረኝና ፈጣሪ ቢፈቅድ ለሁለተኛው ስራዬ የሚያዘጋጀኝ ይሆናል የሚል ፅኑ እምነት አለኝ፡፡ 

The Director’s Statement (Background, Theme, Structure, Tone)

“My Enchained (Quragnayé)” is a story that delves into an extraordinary traditional law that was abolished during modernity in Ethiopia. I came up with this story while reading books on the
traditional laws of Ethiopia. Until the early and mid-19th century in Ethiopia, institutional prisons did not exist and the justice process was remarkable.  The current justice system has a lot to learn from the past. During those times, rivals of any sort were chained their togas together until they stood trial in front of the royal judge—a process that usually involves the rivals traveling for many days from their hometowns to the court.  At the royal court, they perform a traditional court debate with double meaning and poetic riddles, and movement and gesticulation to impress the queen and the attendants of the open court.

I imagined a story about a traditional student, who has a love affair with the wife of a local judge and, after being caught red-handed while sleeping with her, is chained to his lover’s husband and sets out on a 15-day journey to a queen's court. The development of the synopsis, the treatment and the script was rewarding for me as I was very eager to go back in time and be part of that old tradition. I have visited the locations and everything is still there; the farms, the old palace, the rivers, the open market, and the landscape are all breathtaking. As a filmmaker and as someone living in a culture where oral tradition is still prominent, my heart is fully engaged in bringing into the public eye and in celebrating underrepresented African narratives through story, sound, and pictures.

Directors Biography

Moges Tafesse is a documentary filmmaker and TV producer from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He also produces and directs a weekly TV show “Ene ‘Miteyekew (My Quest)”. Currently, he has completed a documentary film on interracial adoption entitled “A Season for Dancing (www.aseasonfordancing.com).

He established and has been running Synergy Habesha Films and Communications with the motto “Empowering Community through Media” for the past ten years (www.synergyhabesha.com).

Qualification: PhD in Social Work and Social Development, Addis Ababa University, MA in International Studies, Louisiana Baptist University; MSW in Social Work, Addis Ababa Universality. Moges has also attended extensive training on Directing and Script writing by UNESCO-IICBA. Media Working Groups, Kentucky; Grand Rapids Community Media Center, Michigan; Ethiopian Film Initiative, Goethe- Institute. Also a training on Film Financing by International Emerging Film Talents Association (IEFTA) in Monaco.
